How DePINly estimates Helium hotspot earnings. Last verified 2026-05-20.
TL;DR
Since HIP-138 (Jan 2025) every Helium hotspot — IoT or Mobile — earns HNT directly. The IOT and MOBILE sub-tokens are no longer emitted (pre-existing balances stay convertible to HNT). The calculator reasons in HNT/day, applies location/placement multipliers, and converts to USD with the live CoinGecko HNT price.
Key network facts (verified)
| Fact | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Single reward token | HNT, since 2025-01-29 (HIP-138) | HIP-138 blog |
| 2025 halving | 2025-08-01: 15M → 7.5M HNT/year (≈ 20,548 HNT/day) | docs.helium.com/tokens/hnt-token |
| Active IoT hotspots | ~385,000 | Messari State of Helium Q4 2025 |
| Active Mobile hotspots | ~63,000 | Messari State of Helium 2025 |
| Halving impact | Proof-of-Coverage rewards specifically reduced | Helium blog |
How IoT baselines are anchored
20,548 HNT/day ÷ ~385,000 IoT hotspots × ~25–30% emission to IoT PoC
≈ 0.013–0.016 HNT/day per hotspot (network mean, post-halving)
Rewards are highly skewed, so tiers sit around that mean:
| Tier (IoT) | HNT/day | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| high | 0.040 | Suburban outdoor sweet spot (above mean) |
| mid | 0.015 | Urban typical (≈ emission-derived mean) |
| low | 0.004 | Dense-urban / saturated (below mean) |
Sanity check at HNT $4: mid ≈ $1.8/mo, high ≈ $4.8/mo (band ×2 → ~$9.6/mo), consistent with operator-reported $4–8/mo typical in 2025.
Multipliers
| Input | Values | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | outdoor 1.00 · indoor 0.35 | LoRaWAN RF literature (~3× outdoor) |
| 5G CBRS boost | ×1.40 | Adds coverage rewards on top of base |
| Reasonable band | ×0.5 (low) – ×2.0 (high) | Captures real skew |
Per-type confidence
| Type | Confidence | Why |
|---|---|---|
| IoT | 🟢 High | Anchored to verified HNT emission and IoT hotspot count |
| Mobile | 🟡 Medium | Post-HIP-138 reward split is not published; depends heavily on real data traffic. Baselines kept as estimate (0.5 / 0.15 / 0.02 HNT/day) |
| Mapper | 🔴 Low | Marginal, opaque app-based rewards (0.005 / 0.001 / 0.0002 HNT/day) |
We deliberately did not recalibrate Mobile/Mapper: there is no reliable public figure for their per-hotspot emission, and inventing one would be worse than flagging the uncertainty.
Suggested hardware cost (for ROI)
| Type | Indoor | Outdoor | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| IoT | $250 | $550 | Bobcat / Sensecap / RAK vendor pricing |
| Mobile | $1,750 | $2,400 | CBRS small-cell gear |
| Mapper | $0 | $0 | Wallet app only |
Disclaimer
Helium rewards are highly skewed by local demand and coverage quality, and the Aug 2025 halving reduced Proof-of-Coverage emissions. The numbers are point estimates with a ±50%/+100% band — guidance, not a guarantee. Mobile and Mapper figures carry lower confidence (see above).
