A peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol that addresses content by its cryptographic hash rather than by location, enabling resilient and verifiable file distribution.
IPFS content identifiers (CIDs) guarantee that retrieved data matches what was stored, since any tampering changes the hash. Filecoin adds economic incentives on top of IPFS: storage providers are paid to keep files pinned and prove they still hold them via PoRep and PoSt.
